PORTUGUESE ART
In painting, sculpture and gold and silver-smithery, the pieces that make up this collection reflect changes in taste, technical developments and the influences that Portuguese art has been incorporating. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it is notable the influence received mainly from the Nordic schools - Flemish in particular.
In the Mannerist period, dominant especially in the 16th century in Europe, the Italian influence grows.
After the decline of the sugar culture, the cultivation of vines and the production of wine in Madeira grew. The counter-reform provisions and the advent of the Baroque are particularly intelligible in some examples of the nationally produced sculpture and silversmithery collection
