Orange blossoms, adornment and devotion - Know-how with Lígia Brazão
4pm - 6pm
At this event, participants will be able to learn about the process of making orange blossoms from fabric and wax, through a demonstration by Lígia Brazão.
These flowers were once used to decorate altar images, whether in the context of domestic devotion or in religious spaces. They were also popular in the making of wedding ornaments and were disseminated through convent traditions.
Before the demonstration, participants will also have the opportunity to watch a brief presentation by Dr. Martinho Mendes (CEHA-AV), entitled “Reduced Ephemerality: Artificial Flowers in Madeiran Photography between the End of the 19th Century and the Beginning of the 20th Century”, which is based on the analysis of some images from Madeiran photographic archives held by DRABL, where the presence of artificial flowers — especially orange blossoms — in studio portraits between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century can be observed.
