Divine Child - Faces of Devotion
On December 12th at 5:30 PM, the exhibition "Child God – Faces of Devotion" will be inaugurated at the MASF
Representations of the Child God reached their peak in the 17th and 18th centuries, driven by the provisions of the Council of Trent. During this period, themes, models, and associated devotions multiplied.
In Madeira, the appreciation and tenderness for the Child endured and took root, gaining its own unique expression.
The Museum of Sacred Art brings together, therefore, this Christmas, a collection of images of the Child, from local churches and convents, but above all, from private collections. Thus, a glimpse is lifted into the universe of collectors who maintain devotion to the Child God.
Composed of several sections, the exhibition also includes three new additions this year, 2025: two small nativity scene machines and a painting attributed to Bento Coelho da Silveira, which will be shown to our audiences for the first time.
The exhibition will be open to the public until February 2nd.
“Songs to the Baby Jesus”
Also on December 12th, at 7 pm, the Musical and Cultural Association, Xarabanda, will present traditional Madeiran Christmas songs, dedicated to the Christmas season.
