To see until October 18th: Exhibition Altar Vase: Flowers and liturgy through the ceramics of José Manuel Gomes

Highlighting the importance of altar vases as elements that value and enhance flowers in the liturgical context, the reading proposed in this MASF exhibition includes an important set of contemporary artistic ceramics by the sculptor José Manuel Gomes. The work developed points to many paths, one of which is to transcend the traditional liturgical purpose of vases or jars, turning them into works of art in themselves.
This exhibition, with free access, has been on display since the 21st of June, in the temporary exhibition room of the Museu de Arte Sacra do Funchal (MASF) and can be visited until the 18th of October.

6:30 PM | Conference - Jars and Flowers in Flemish Painting, Martinho Mendes
(conference in portuguese)

From the second half of the 14th century, Flemish artists applied increasing realism and naturalism to their painting. In this context, the botanical representations, which accompanied the great biblical themes represented in the painting of this period, acquired greater representational rigor, but also a deeper symbolic value: the species of plant, its colors and even the number of plants and efflorescences represented. may be subject to symbolic interpretation.
The flower container vases represented in the interior environments also invite readings about the meanings and even the forms, materials and techniques applied in the eras to which they relate.
Some readings on this subject will be proposed by Martinho Mendes, regarding the National Day of the Church's cultural assets and based on the context of the exhibition Altar Vases: Flowers and liturgy through the ceramics of José Manuel Gomes.
