Easter at MASF
The Sacred Art Museum of Funchal, as in previous years, offers an Easter program taking place between the 15th and 25th of March 2024. This program provides its audiences with experiences, through a set of actions that include practical workshops , a thematic visit and a conference.
The activities have a pre-defined capacity and require prior registration via 291 228 900.
Palm hearts workshop
March 15th and 16th, 2024
10:00 am to 12:30 pm
Price: €15
Capacity: 8 adults
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and remembers Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The reception was marked by the people with olive branches and palm leaves, symbols that continue to be used in the celebration of this moment, in which palm leaves receive elaborate decorative effects, popularly known as palm hearts.
In this workshop it will be possible for each participant to learn about the process and create their own palm heart.

This visit aims to introduce you to the works in the museum's permanent collection relating to the Easter period.
CONFERENCE – What the eyes don’t see. “Broken Christ(s): The piece, the text, the silence”

“Many (…) walk along the street an invisible broken Christ” (Cué, 26th ed., 18)
Integrated in the Project, “What the eyes don't see”, which aims to associate a piece from the Sacred Art Museum of Funchal with a text, Broken Christ(s) intends to relate a Christ from a Flemish school from the 19th century, an image of sublime expressiveness, with a book by the Spanish Jesuit, Ramon Cue, “My Broken Christ” (1963).
It is, therefore, a reflection, integrated into this time of Lent, on the broken Christs of our times, on how they should be restored.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Graça Maria Nóbrega Alves was born in Funchal, where she resides. She has a degree in Modern Languages and Literature from the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon. She was a teacher, developed projects linked to Literature, Island Studies and Life Stories, at the Atlantic History Studies Center – Alberto Vieira, between 2010 and 2019. She was Director of Services for Museums and Cultural Centers, until 2023. She is director of the Sacred Art Museum of Funchal.
She has won some literary prizes and is the author of several works, co-author of some essays on literature, memories, island studies and life stories, written short stories for several collections, has articles published in national and foreign newspapers and magazines and maintains a chronicle in a Madeiran newspaper.
