Processional Cross
Spain or France
1451 <> 1500
Wrought in brass and translucent enamel, this processional Cross is a rare example on this Island, differing from all other pieces on display. Nonetheless, other crosses of similar morphology and aesthetics are to be found in the mainland, in Portugal, and Spain. The center of the cross bears a small canopy and two radiant elements - traces of now-lost images, most likely of Christ Crucified and of Virgin Mary.
On the flattened, spherical knot of the cross survives an enameled figure, depicting a head profile.
